Dozens of the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Awami League's student wing, staged a sit-in in front of Dhaka University (DU) vice chancellor's office Wednesday in a bid to pressure authorities into releasing BCL central committee general secretary and DU student Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, reports bdnews24.com.
They, however, withdrew the demonstration later after VC SMA Faiz sought time until 7:00 pm to make headway with the release of Roton.
BCL acting general secretary Syed Abdul Kalam told the news agency that the VC had talks with the government high-ups about the release. And the matter drew the attention of government, Kalam said quoting Faiz.
Earlier, Roton's father Afsar Uddin Haider Chowdhury met the VC.
The BCL Tuesday called a strike at DU campus for Wednesday for the same cause only to call it off shortly afterwards on assurance by university authorities that their demand would be taken care of.
The BCL had confined DU vice chancellor SMA Faiz for three hours inside his office and called strike in the campus for Wednesday to demand release of Roton.
