Criticising Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) concept of having school committees, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Saturday there is no need of such committees, report agencies.
"The concept of having school committees of BCL is not right. There's no need to form school committees. This will draw flak for the party," he said.
The AL General Secretary directed BCL not to form BCL committees at the school level.
Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a programme organised by the BCL central committee at Abdul Karim Shahitto Bisharad auditorium of Bangla Academy, marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day and the Victory Day.
The ruling party leader said students should focus more on study rather than politics. "It'll be an extra burden for the students if the politics makes its entry at the school level. The colleges and university students can be involved in the politics," he said.
He asked the BCL men to remain alert so that their activities cannot harm the party.
Presided over by BCL president Saifur Rahman Sohag, its general secretary SM Zakir Hossain also spoke at the programme.
Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Saturday the ruling party still remains popular in Rangpur despite the defeat of its mayoral candidate in the city corporation elections.
"We are still very popular in Rangpur," Quader said.
"Though we lost the mayor's race, we still have the most councillor seats. Those seats are more important to us and we are still No 1 among them."
Mr Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the remarks while speaking to journalists regarding the defeat of AL candidate and incumbent mayor Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.
The seat in the hometown of HM Ershad was won by Jatiya Party's candidate Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa by nearly 100,000 votes.
Though elections for councillor posts are not based on party, most of the positions were won by AL ward leaders.
The AL took 14 of the wards, the BNP took eight and the Jatiya Party won two.
"Many will make many political comments, but our party's position is still firm," said Quader, who spoke to reporters after placing flowers at the grave of the party leader Abdur Razzak in Banani on his sixth death anniversary on Saturday.
The AL leader said the local polls would not impact the national elections.
"This was a local government election. It's fine to discuss it in the context of the national election. But will it have a national impact? We are facing the upcoming national elections confidently. We are very confident we will receive substantial support and win by a wide margin."
A BSS report adds: AL paid tributes to its former general secretary and former Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak on his 6th death anniversary.
AL and its associate bodies paid homage to Razzak by placing wreaths at his grave in the city's Banani graveyard.
Obaidul Quader, organising secretaries Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Dhaka South City AL general secretary Shahe Alam Murad and Bangladesh Chhatra League Central president Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain were present on the occasion.
Later, they offered munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Razzak.
The AL leader also praised Razzak, one of the main organisers of the War of Liberation.
"He was a brave leader in times of crisis. We honour him."
Razzak died at a London hospital on December 23, 2011. He was born on August 1, 1942.
Razzak was general secretary of the AL and played an active role in the 1962 education movement, the Six-Point Movement and the Independence Movement.
He was the Sariatpur-3 AL MP until his death. He also served as a minister in the 1996-2001 Sheikh Hasina administration.
