Bangladesh takes a pragmatic approach to the protection of civilians (POC) mandate for UN peacekeeping operations, and considers it to be an important yardstick for the legitimacy and credibility of peacekeeping missions, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam told the International Conference on the Protection of Civilians held in the Rwandan capital on May 28-29, reports UNB.
The conference was held in follow up to the Peacekeeping Summit that the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina co-chaired with US Vice-President John Biden and other leaders in September 2014 in New York.
Shahriar highlighted that Bangladeshi peacekeepers had effectively protected civilians in a number of conflict situations, often at great risks to themselves.
