Benazir committed unprecedented corruption, says Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed had committed unprecedented level of corruption.

He also said that the ruling Awami League has almost destroyed the country.

Mr Fakhrul was addressing a discussion marking the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, organised by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, BNP's associate body for women, at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.

Observing that the country's electoral system has almost broken down, he said, "Three national elections were held under the present government. All three elections were proved farcical."

Citing a comment made by an election commissioner that free and fair election may not be possible under the present 'adverse political environment', he said, "No political party wants to participate in the election seeing the environment (adverse) that the ruling Awami League (AL) has created. And due to this reason the whole election system has been broken down."

"Today this government has not only destroyed the country's political system but also the whole country," he continued.

Commenting that the ruling AL was exploiting Bangladesh, he said, "The condition of primary school curriculum (books) is grave because falsehoods are being spread through these books."

"Only one person's name is widespread even though names of their (AL) other leaders like Tajuddin Ahmed were not mentioned (in the books). The name of Colonel (red) Ataul Gani Osmani was not mentioned either," he added.

"They (AL) have been exploiting and looting the country for long time this way. They have snatched away the country people's rights," Mr Fakhrul said.

Mr Fakhrul called upon all to come out for protests following the surge in prices of essential commodities including rice, vegetables and others.
