BGB ready to tackle any situation, says its DG

CHATTOGRAM, Dec 23: The members of Border Guard Bangladesh are ready to tackle any situation arising out of the upcoming parliamentary elections as it has deployed sufficient forces across the country to maintain law and order.

Director General of the BGB Major General Safinul Islam said this after inspecting the BGB temporary Camp at Patiya Model High School field. He met with the media persons after inspecting and holding talks with the officers and members of the BGB.

He arrived at the Patiya High School field by a helicopter on Sunday morning and exchanged views with the officials concerned.

He discussed in details the prevailing situation in the district and city with the Returning Officer of Chattogram district and Deputy Commissioner Md Ilyas Hossain, Police Super of Chattogram Nure Alam Mina, senior officers and members of the BGB deployed in Chattogram.

Commander of BGB South-East Region (Chattogram) Brigadier General Md Adil Chowdhury, Deputy Regional Commander Col Arefin Talukder, Director of BGB-8 Battalion Lt Col Munir Hassan and other officers were present in the meeting.

The DG said the BGB-8 Battalion was deployed on December 18 but they started working from December 20. A total of 1,115 platoons of the BGB have been deployed on election duty throughout the country while 145 platoons have been deployed in Chattogram alone. Each platoon has 30 members of the BGB.

He said each constituency has one BGB camp while each upazila (sub-district) has 04-05 platoons. In the city, each ward of Chittagong City Corporation has 03-04 platoons of the BGB.

"We are working to maintain peaceful and safe environment for holding a fair and free election. There is so far no worth-mentioning undesirable incident," he said.

In reply to another query if they are facing any challenge in performing election duty, he told the media that they are not facing any kind of challenge at all.
