Bicycle rental service opens in city today

It'll cover Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan

On-demand bicycle renting service will be launched in the city's Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan areas today (Wednesday) for providing a safe, affordable and environment-friendly transport system amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 100 bicycles under the Jobike service will be available at 22 parking spots in these areas, which riders can hire at the rate of Tk 1.0 per minute.

A launching ceremony of the service will be held in Gulshan-2 area at 11:30 am, where Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam will be present as the chief guest.

The DNCC mayor will ride a bicycle in front of Lab Aid Gulshan and roam around Banani 11 after the ceremony, where Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed is also expected to be present.

Chief Operating Officer of Jobike Mohammad Mehdi Reza said with an app anyone can hire bicycle from the specific spots and travel safe within the fencing area.

He also said as a form of useful public transport, bicycle also poses the lowest risk of COVID-19 transmission. A group of Jobike people will disinfect their bicycles at parking spots to avert spreading infection.

DNCC and ICT Division are the partners of Jobike. It has been continuing operations on various university campuses, including Dhaka and Chattogram, since 2018 to provide students with an affordable mode of transport for their daily activities. The service is also used in Mirpur DOHS area.
