BNP accused the government Monday of barbarically repressing opposition leaders and activists in a medieval style to keep them away from impending movement, reports UNB.
"The current illegal regime which has usurped state power through a voter-less election has increased the degree of its repression by establishing a terror-like governing system across the country only to protect its illegal existence," said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
In a statement, he further said, "Alongside perpetrating killings, secret killings, enforced disappearances and abduction, the government is persecuting the opposition leaders and activists in a medieval style putting them on remands after their arrest in false cases in a bid to force them to stay away from the movement."
The statement was issued condemning the arrest of BNP executive committee member Kamruzzaman Ratan. He was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his return home from Bangkok Sunday after receiving treatment.
Mirza Fakhrul warned that the growing repressive acts are making people more fearless and encouraged to resist and oust the repressive regime.
Mentioning that the country is now under the whimsical rule of one person, he said people are now fed-up with the sliding law and order situation. "People now want to get rid of the poisonous grasp of the ruling party."
