BNP accuses govt of repression on opposition politicos

BNP senior leader Brig Gen (retd) ASM Hannan Shah accused the government Thursday of engaging in repressive measures against the opposition politicians who provide leadership in favour of the people, reports UNB.

"The government has taken such a stance over the opposition parties as it fears the people and considers them as enemy," he said, at a memorial meeting on former BNP vice-president, late Afsar Uddin Ahmed.

The meeting was organised by Afsar Uddin Ahmed Memorial Foundation at the Jatiya Press Club.

Hannan Shah alleged that the people do not like the rule of the incumbent government, rather hate it.

He said: "Sometime this hatred will turn into grievance leading to the fall of the autocratic government. I'm sure the people will fight back against the government's misrule in the interest of democracy and restoration of voting rights."

Referring to the recent achievements of Bangladesh over the elections for the chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the BNP standing committee member said the government would not be able to retain power indefinitely despite getting certificates from abroad.

BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP chairperson's adviser journalist Shawkat Mahmud and journalist Ruhul Amin Gazi, among others, spoke at the meeting, chaired by Jahanara Siddique, convener of Afsar Uddin Ahmed Memorial Foundation.
