The BNP-led 20-party alliance alleged Wednesday that the government is trying to put the final nail into the coffin of the judiciary by empowering an 'unacceptable and unrepresentative' parliament to impeach Supreme Court (SC) judges, reports UNB.
"Why is the government hurriedly trying to amend the constitution again to empower such a parliament which the country's people don't accept and which has no representation of people to impeach judges?" said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a rally, he further said, "The intention behind the move is very clear that the government is trying to put the last nail into the coffin of the judiciary and establish its final control over it."
The Dhaka city unit of the 20-party alliance arranged the rally at the Jatiya Press Club protesting the government's move to re-empower parliament to sack judges by abolishing the Supreme Judicial Council.
Earlier Tuesday, the alliance staged demonstrations across the country on the same issue.
Addressing the rally, Mirza Fakhrul said the government has taken the move so that no judge can independently give their well-thought-out verdict against the government. "Controlling the judges by intimidating to remove them is the main reason behind the decision."
The BNP leader claimed that if the current parliament gets such power the door for justice will be shut. "We must resist the move."
Criticising the government for framing the National Broadcast Policy, 2014, he said the policy was made hastily to reinforce the government' s present silent and covert censorship on the news media. "The media outlets won't be able now to independently present any news and publish the views of people."
The BNP leader also accused the government of destroying all the democratic institutions, the economy, and financial institutions and controlling the law enforcers and every basic pillar of the country, including the administration.
Mirza Fakhrul came down hard on the ministers who bitterly criticised BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman for his remarks in London that Awami League is a party of black sheep and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killers are now in Sheikh Hasina's cabinet, saying Tarique's true remarks are now pinching them.
"You start hurling abusive words and using non-political language if anyone tells the truth. Why don't you keep in mind that you have to get the hit back if you hit others? Why do you expect people will only endure your mockery sitting idle when you call Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia killers and Tarique Rahman black sheep? You have to face the tit for tat. You've now got unnerved and making unguarded remarks after having the hit back," he said.
