BNP blasts govt for \\\'besieging\\\' its central office

BNP accused government of using the law enforcers in besieging the BNP's Nayapaltan central office Friday in a bid to confine the party leaders and activists and thus foil its chairperson Khaleda Zia's birthday celebration programmes there, reports UNB.

"We've noticed with wonder that the law enforcers and plainclothes police are illegally preventing our leaders and activists from entering our central office. They've cordoned off it since morning," said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Addressing a press briefing at the BNP central office, he also said: "We think it's an evil move of the government to keep confined the leaders and activists of the country's biggest political party and foil our programmes."

Amid the criticism by the ruling party, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia celebrated her birthday by cutting cakes at her Gulshan office at the wee hours while the nation started observing the 39th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the National Mourning Day.

Different associate bodies of BNP were also scheduled to mark the birthday by cutting cakes at the BNP's central office at 10:00 am, but police started taking position in front of it since 8am with armoured vehicles, water cannons and a prison van, foiling the programme.

Asked whether the BNP associate bodies have cancelled the birthday celebration programmes, Rizvi said: "How there could be a programme when police are not allowing our leaders and activists to enter the office?"

He said the illegal regime which usurped power through the January-5 'farcical' election has exposed its fascist attitude through besieging their party office.

He warned the government that people are getting ready to give a befitting reply to the government's unjust and repressive acts by ousting it through a strong movement.

He said they have taken all-out preparations to observe their scheduled black-flag procession in the city on Saturday, protesting the killing of over 2,000 innocent Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

He said the leaders and activists of the 20-party alliance will start the procession from BNP's Nayapaltan central office around 3:00 pm.

Replying to a question, Rizvi said they have already sought a written permission from the police. "The authorities have responded positively though we're yet to receive the written permission."
