Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has alleged that the BNP is treading the same 'fascist path' as the Awami League (AL), reports UNB.
He said BNP is opposing key reform initiatives that, in his view, are essential for state restructuring, calling it a 'clear betrayal of the nation.'
Speaking at a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday afternoon, attended by families of those killed and injured in the July Uprising,
Dr. Rahman, who is also the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, claimed that while the ruling party refers to the July Uprising and Shaheed Hadi in parliament, its actions do not align with its rhetoric.
He further stated that the party accepts '51 per cent of votes when it serves its interests' but rejects what he described as a '70 per cent mandate' aimed at preventing dictatorship, ending discrimination, ensuring good governance, and restoring genuine freedom. He termed this inconsistency 'shameful,' arguing that acceptance of such a mandate would free the country from authoritarianism.
Warning that the current political landscape would not have emerged without the July Uprising, he said, "If people had not sacrificed their lives, you could not have come to power." He also criticised BNP for allegedly failing to stand beside the families of the martyrs during their period of grief, instead focusing on electoral gains.
He acknowledged the role of students in the movement, adding that political leadership carries accountability to every individual and family.
He further accused BNP of dismantling laws and ordinances aimed at reform, describing it as a shift towards authoritarian tendencies.
Leaders from several political parties, including AB Party Secretary General Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, JAGPA President Barrister Tasmia Pradhan, BDP Chairman Advocate Anwarul Islam Chan, and Bangladesh Nizam-e-Islam Party Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Mukhlesur Rahman Qasemi, also spoke at the rally.
