In a scathing attack on the Prime Minister (PM), BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday Sheikh Hasina should do 'Tawba' (repentance) for running the state as per the will of a particular country ignoring Bangladesh people's desire, reports UNB.
"The Prime Minister actually wants to cut her nose to spite others' face by always talking rude…Tawba (repentance) is applicable for Sheikh Hasina as she is running the country at the dictate of a country paying no heed to the country's majority people's wish," he said.
Rizvi came up with the counter-attack at a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office as the PM on Saturday asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to do Tawba for resorting to falsehood.
Addressing a function on Saturday, PM Sheikh Hasina asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to do Tawba that she will never tell a lie in the future.
Reacting to the PM's remark, Rizvi said, "Actually, she (Hasina) wishes to do Tawba herself by advising others to do so."
Pointing at Sheikh Hasina, the BNP leader said, "Her father (Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) was an ideal politician and revered person. Despite being the daughter of such a father, we don't know from where the Prime Minter has learnt the language she uses."
Criticising the government for what he said its growing repressive acts, Rizvi said the country is now under an undeclared curfew where opposition cannot exercise it s democratic rights.
He also alleged that the government is killing and making the opposition leaders and activists disappeared alongside repression, harassment and arrest to perpetuate its illegal rule.
"They (govt) are trying to cling to power using muscle power by snatching people's all the democratic rights. They've completed funeral of the democracy through holding a farcical and lopsided election on January 5," Rizvi added.
Addressing the briefing, BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy alleged that the government wants to snatch the polls results without holding the elections.
Accusing the ruling party 'cadres' of attacking the BNP-backed candidates and its leaders and activists to manipulate upazila polls, he said Awami League men carried out attacks on 19-party-backed candidate Nazimuddim Master several times in Keraniganj upazila.
