Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed returned home on Sunday (Bangladesh) after spending over nine years in India.

Member of BNP media cell Sairul Kabir Khan told the FE that Mr Salahuddin Ahmed arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Delhi, India at around 2:15 pm.

BNP vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon, other party leaders and Mrs Salahuddin received and welcomed him (Salahuddin) at the VIP Lounge of the airport.

Mr Salahuddin Ahmed who also served as a state minister during the then BNP regime went missing on March 2015.

Later after two months he was found in Shillong, the capital of Indian state of Meghalaya, on May 11, 2015.

BNP said that Mr Salahuddin had been abducted at that time.

But nobody knows how he was abducted and subsequently reached Shillong.

Later Indian police arrested him and filed a case against him on charge of illegal intrusion.

An Indian lower court on July 22, 2015 framed charges against him under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946 for entering India without valid papers.

Mr Salahuddin was acquitted by the Indian lower court in a verdict in 2018.

Later the Indian government filed an appeal against the verdict to the higher court that forced him to stay in that country.

Mr Salahuddin got release following an appeal on February 28, 2023.

The court later ordered the Indian authorities to send Mr Salahuddin back to Bangladesh.
