BNP leaders held over arson attacks in Magura, Bhola

Detectives arrested on Sunday a BNP leader in connection with the arson attack that claimed the lives of five workers at Moghirdhal on the Magura-Jessore highway at Sadar upazila of Magura on March 21 from Ichhakhada Bazar area of the upazila, reports UNB.

The arrestee was identified as Mizanur Rahman, publicity secretary of district BNP.

 Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Sudarshan Kumar Ray said on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Mizanur in the afternoon.

Earlier on March 21, nine sand workers suffered burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack on a truck at Moghirdal on Magura-Jessore highway in Sadar upazila during the three-month hartal-blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

The injured were admitted to burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where five of them succumbed to their injures later.

A case was filed against 26 leaders and activists in connection with the arson attack.

Mizanur, accused in the case, remained absconding since the incident, said OC Munsi Asaduzzaman.

Meanwhile, police arrested a BNP leader at Borhanuddin upazila of Bhola on Sunday night in a case filed in connection with torching a bus.

The arrestee was identified as Sarwar Uddin Khan, joint secretary of the upazila unit of BNP.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid on the house of Sarwar and arrested him at night, said officer-in-charge of Doulatkhan thana Mir Khairul Kabir.

Earlier, a case was filed against Sarwar with the thana on charge of torching a bus during the three-month hartal-blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
