BNP has started taking preparations for holding its sixth national council within three months by forming fresh committees of its 75 district units through councils by September 30, reports UNB.
Senior party leaders said their party chief wants to invigorate its city and district, upazila municipal committees first with dedicated and competent leaders before overhauling the central committee.
As part of the party's first step towards holding the national council, they said the BNP chairperson has already asked its district units to constitute new committees through holding councils.
Once the party's upazila and municipal, and district committees are formed, the party will hold its sixth national council by November next to complete the party's overhauling process and make it ready for another round of strong anti-government movement, the senior leaders said.
Contacted, BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said, "The council has already been delayed by nearly three years. Now we've started the process for arranging our national council. We've already asked our 75 organisational district units to form all the committees under them by September 30."
He said the grassroots committees will be formed inducting young, active and capable party leaders and activists into the leadership. At the same time, the elderly and competent leaders who have become physically weak because of age will be kept in advisory committees. The advisers will enjoy the status of vice-president, the BNP leader added.
"We' hope we'll be able to hold our national council by the end of October or mid-November," Mahbub said.
"As part of our move to hold the national council, we're now working to form our grassroots committees from every ward unit through councils. Once all the committees of our 75 organisational units are formed, we'll hold the national council," said party vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman.
He said the national council can be held in mid-October if the grassroots committees can be formed within the September-30 deadline.
