The BNP National Standing Committee has decided to intensify the party's organisational activities nationwide, directing all units and affiliated bodies to become more active, reports UNB.
It also called for stronger grassroots organisation ahead of local government elections and decided to convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee as soon as possible, assigning Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to make the necessary arrangements.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the party's highest policymaking body, chaired by BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the party chairperson's Gulshan office on Saturday night.
The committee reviewed the implementation of earlier decisions and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the government's priority programmes, including the Family Card and Farmer Card schemes, canal excavation projects, and financial allowances for religious leaders of different faiths.
It also assessed the implementation of the BNP's election manifesto, praising Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's initiatives and expressing confidence that the manifesto's commitments would be fulfilled within the stipulated timeframe.
On political issues, the committee accused the opposition of trying to mislead the public over the July Charter and the referendum. It decided to step up efforts to communicate the party's position on the issues and instructed relevant leaders and organisations to launch a wider public awareness campaign.
The meeting also reviewed the outcome of the 2026 general election and tasked Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan with preparing a comprehensive report on the polls.
In addition, the committee was briefed on the agreements signed during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visits to Malaysia and China. It said the visits had strengthened Bangladesh's development cooperation with the two countries, contributed to economic progress, and marked significant diplomatic achievements based on mutual respect. The committee congratulated the Prime Minister on what it described as the successful outcome of the visits.
The meeting voiced concern over the renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States after a recent ceasefire, urging both countries to end the conflict through dialogue. The committee said the fighting was having a serious economic impact on the Middle East and the wider region.
The committee also welcomed the election of Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as president of the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as a major diplomatic achievement under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership. It expressed hope that the development would strengthen Bangladesh's international standing and help advance efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
Domestically, the committee expressed concern over the country's worsening drug problem and called on the government to take stronger and more effective measures to curb drug abuse and trafficking.
The meeting paid tribute to former BNP treasurer, former minister and former Munshiganj MP Mizanur Rahman Sinha, and former chief whip, former minister and former Brahmanbaria MP Harun-or-Rashid, expressing condolences to their bereaved families and praying for the eternal peace of their souls.
The committee also expressed concern over the health of senior BNP leaders Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas and Nazrul Islam Khan, offering prayers for their speedy recovery.
The meeting concluded with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman thanking the participants. Among those attending were Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku and Selima Rahman. Mirza Abbas, who is receiving medical treatment in Malaysia, joined the meeting virtually.
