BNP shocked at loss of lives in Bailey Road fire

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expressed on Friday deep shock at the loss of lives in the devastating fire that happened at a multi-storey building in the capital's Bailey Road area on Thursday night.
"Accident and disaster may happen if there is no rule of law in the country as the government doesn't need to be accountable to the people," said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement.
"The loss of lives and groaning of those undergoing treatment being injured in the fire are really heart wrenching," he added.
"I am quite saddened and shocked at the loss of lives. I pray to the Almighty so that the family members may have the courage and patience to overcome the great pains for the loss of lives of their dear ones," he said.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam prayed for the salvation of the departed souls and early recovery of those injured and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved families.
Meanwhile, BNP held a view-exchange meeting on Thursday with the party leaders who were released from jail on bail recently.
Member Secretary of Dhaka City North BNP Aminul Haque presided over the meeting held at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital.
He said that the government was trying to remain in power by resorting to oppression and suppression on the opponents.
He added that sending leaders of the opposition parties, including BNP, to jail has become a routine work of the government.
He said, "This anti-people government would no longer be able to stay in power and their thrown will be destroyed like house made of paper cards."
Released BNP leaders of 620 units of Dhaka City North narrated their pains during their stay in jail.
Joint convener of Dhaka City North BNP Ataur Rahman, its members Ali Akbar Ali and Md Yousuf and Ahsan Ullah Chowdhury Hasan were present, among others.
