BNP stages demos against police action

BNP staged demonstrations across the country Sunday in protest against police action foiling its scheduled rally at the Institution of Engineers auditorium in the city Thursday, reports UNB.

The party leaders and activists brought out processions in all the cities, including Dhaka, district towns and upazila headquarters throughout the country to register their protest against the police action.

As part of the country-wide programmes, different thana BNP units brought out processions in the city.

The party in the press release alleged that at least 18 leaders and activists were injured as police attacked their processions in the Mirpur and Shahbagh areas of the city.

It also claimed that police arrested their eight activists.

On Friday, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

Meanwhile, Pro-BNP lawyers observed a court boycott programme across the country on Sunday in protest against police obstruction to hold their scheduled rally on the Supreme Court premises Saturday.

The court boycott programme began at 10 am and continued until 1.0 pm on the day.

As the court boycott programme began, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, a platform of pro-BNP lawyers, brought out a protest procession at Bar Bhaban in the capital around 10 am.

The gate to enter the Supreme Court from the Bar Association building was kept locked.

Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum on Saturday announced a five-day programme, including the court boycott Sunday, in protest against police obstruction to their scheduled rally on the Supreme Court premises.

Forum president Rafiqul Islam Miah announced the programme at a rally held at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
