Soil beneath govt's feet has started moving away: Faruk

FE REPORT | February 04, 2024 00:00:00

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday that they will soon announce a new programme to topple the government for holding a free and fair election under a neutral caretaker government.

"Anti-government programme will be announced for bringing back the caretaker government system for holding a free and fair election to ensure people's voting rights and to help terminate the one-party government system," a member of the BNP chairperson's advisory council, Zainul Abedin Faruq said at a human chain programme organised by Swadinata Adhikar Andolon (SSA) in front of the National Press Club in the city.

"Nowadays the government delivers comments against BNP neglectfully. The soil beneath your (government) feet has started moving away. We will take all accounts from you (government). We (BNP) are on the honest path and not even a single inch of land is in the ownership of our party chairperson (Khaleda Zia) abroad," he said.

"This autocratic government uses state machineries to suppress the opponents," Faruq alleged.

He claimed that people are with them (BNP) though they (opposition) are yet to yield positive results from their ongoing anti-government movement as state machineries are being used against the opponents by the government.

"This government doesn't believe in democracy. If they (government) believed in democracy, they didn't hold farcical elections in 2014 and 2018 and 2024," he continued.

He alleged that the Election Commission (EC) arranged a dummy election on January 07, 2024 by spending around Tk 20 billion.

"They (government) speak of controlling price spiral of essential commodities and at the same time they also patronise market syndicate. They have houses in Canada whereas the people of Bangladesh can't afford to purchase eggs and meat due to high prices. Whenever we (BNP) talk against these, they (government) label us as terrorists," he continued.

"This government embezzled billions of taka in the name of mega projects and they should resign," he said.

"This government is not elected by the people. They don't believe in the freedom of press also," Faruq further said.

"The government shuts down any media outlet whenever it tries to be vocal against them (government)," he commented.

"They (government) don't believe in democracy and for holding a free and fair election, people shouldn't trust them (government),' he said.

"As this government is politically vindictive (against the opponents), we should not believe them (government). This government is not elected by people's votes," he mentioned.

Member of BNP executive committee Abu Naser Rahmatullah presided over the event where leaders and activists of the SSA were also present
