BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said on Sunday that his party would secure a two-thirds majority in the next general election.

Describing BNP as the only popular political party in the country, he said, "Some in the interim government admit to us privately that BNP will win two-thirds majority if the elections are held in December or in June. So, why BNP is exerting pressure for election in December."

The senior BNP leader was addressing a discussion marking the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

Mosharraf argued that December is the appropriate time for election, as public exams will be held in April and May while the monsoon season is set to begin in June.

Furthermore, any delay in election will allow vested interests to hatch plots to destabilise the country, he said, urging the government to arrange the general election by December and ensure smooth transfer of power to an elected government with dignity.

Calling Prof Muhammad Yunus a highly-revered figure, he said that they have faith in him, as he is a Nobel laureate but he has "disheartened us by his remarks that only BNP has demanded an election by December". Citing media reports, Dr Mosharraf added that as many as 52 political parties demanded the national election by December.

The seasoned BNP leader warned that a delay in the parliamentary election will give birth to conspiracies which will throw the entire process into uncertainty.

At another discussion, BNP senior leader Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that it was a big mistake to include students in the advisory council of the interim government.
