The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Thursday called upon the government to announce a date for the parliamentary election to test its popularity.
"If people are with the Awami League why the Prime Minister (PM) is afraid of holding polls…. announce an election date….. it will be proved who have public support," said a statement issued by BNP Joint Secretary General Salah Uddin Ahmed.
The statement came a day after the Prime Minister's remark in the parliament that there was no public support for a 7-point demand placed by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The 20-party alliance placed the 7-point demand for the wellbeing of democratic institutions and freedom of speech, the statement said.
"The PM often says she doesn't do politics for power. Why she is committing genocide to protect her stolen throne. People will not let them (the ruling alliance) fulfil their dream."
Welcoming the Editors' Council for raising concern recently, the statement said the media should join their ongoing movement to protect democracy and stand against the governmentimposed censorship over mass media.
People hope that a good sense will prevail upon the government and it will step down and announce the date for polls to restore peace in the country, it added.
"If the government does not fulfil our demand for a fresh national election, we will have no alternative but to enforce tougher programmes, including shutdown from March 1 next."
