'BNP was involved in BDR bloodbath'

US wants to take ties to new height: FM

FE REPORT | February 27, 2024 00:00:00

Foreign minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was directly involved in the BDR carnage that took place on 25 February 2008.

"The Awami League came to power in 2008 after a landslide victory… It's common sense that no government wants to get involved in any incident that can destabilise it," he argued.

"BNP leaders like Rizvi are talking nonsense out of frustration as they have no existence after the 2024 election. They exist only on TV channels."

Mr Hasan said this as he was asked to comment on BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi's remark that the AL was responsible for the BDR mutiny.

Talking to the media in his residence, the minister pointed out that those killed in the carnage were members of the families linked to the Awami League.

Before the carnage, he said, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia left her cantonment residence early morning, which was very unusual because she was not an early riser.

"It means she knew about the incident beforehand. So, all of these prove that BNP was directly involved in the carnage in a bid to destabilise the government."

Responding to a query about the visiting US team, Mr Hasan said he had a detailed discussion with the US delegation on Sunday.

A whole swath of common issues was put on focus to take the bilateral ties to a new height, he added.

"I have told them that President [Joe] Biden's letter to our prime minister contributed a lot to further solidify the bilateral ties."

Asked whether the US team took any one-sided view as they had meetings with pro-BNP civil society members, the minister said that it was up to them.

But maybe those persons requested an audience with the US team, he added.

"I hope in future they will meet with people of all quarters," concluded the minister.
