BNP's countrywide rallies today

Protest against Saturday's attacks on leaders, activists

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will hold rallies across the country today (Monday) in protest against Saturday's attacks on its leaders and activists by Awami League activists and police in the capital.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the fresh announcement at a press briefing at the party's chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital on Saturday evening.

He said that his party leaders and activists while peacefully observing their sits-in at different entrances of the capital on Saturday came under attacks by police and ruling party cadres.

He said that they had decided to organise protest rallies on Sunday but later the date was shifted to Monday as the ruling party has called a political programme the same day (Sunday).

"We are on the movement to unseat the government and hold national elections under a neutral caretaker government," he said.

Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the police and Awami League supporters resorted to attacks on BNP leaders and activists at Matuail, Gabtoli and other parts of the city while they were trying to observe their sits-in at the entrances in the capital peacefully.

Clashes erupted between police and BNP activists during sits-in have left injured party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy at Dholaikhal and adviser to the party chairperson Aman Ullah Aman at Gabtoli along with some other police personnel.

Later, police took away Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and provided treatment at Central Police Hospital in the capital. Later he was taken to Detective Brach police headquarters in the city.

Later Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was shifted to his office at Naya Paltan in the city after taking lunch with the head of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch Harun-or Rashid.

Aman Ullah Aman was also taken to a city hospital by police and received treatment. Later, an official of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's office brought fruits and lunch for him on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, during the clashes with police on Saturday several BNP leaders and activists were also injured in Dholaikhal, Matuail, Uttara and Gabtoli areas in the city.

BNP observed sits-in from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
