BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman said on Friday the party will soon announce its decision about the elections to Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations, reports UNB.
"BNP is yet to decide whether it'll join the city corporation polls or not. There're discussions within the party about the city corporation polls. The party will very soon finalise its decision about it and inform the media," he said.
The BNP leader further said, "There're differences of opinion among the party men over the city corporation polls. Some BNP leaders and activists think the party should not leave the field empty to the government to score alone. Some others think we should not join the polls as most BNP prospective candidates and leaders and activists in the city are either facing false cases or languishing in jail."
Mahbub made the remarks while talking to reporters at the residence of missing BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed.
Asked about his personal opinion, the BNP standing committee member said under the current context of the country the party should mainly focus on the national election. "The 10th parliament is controversial one. So, we should now seriously think about a fresh free and fair election," he added.
On Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the schedule for the three city corporation elections- Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).
As per the schedule, the election will be held in the three major city corporations on April 28.
Mahbub went to the BNP leader's Gulshan residence around 11:00 am to express his sympathy to the worried family members over the disappearance of Salahuddin since March 10.
He enquired about the condition of the family members and consoled them.
