Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been on the movement to restore democracy and establish people's voting rights in the country, said the party's Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Wednesday.

"BNP is working to bring back democracy and people's voting rights," he told the media after offering fateha at the grave of Arafat Rahman Koko, youngest son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, at Banani Graveyard in the capital.

"Arafat Rahman Koko (late younger son of Begum Zia) was a sports organiser. He never did politics. But he had to leave the world due to conspiracy," Mr Moyeen Khan said.

"Bangladesh was established for democracy but today there is no democracy. We expect to bring back democracy and economic emancipation for ordinary people," he maintained.

Other leaders and activists of BNP were also present. They paid their respects to Koko and placed wreaths at his grave marking his 9th death anniversary.

BNP Standing Committee member Begum Selima Rahman, vice-chairman Zahid Rahman, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, adviser to the party's chairperson, Zainul Abedin Faruq, and the party's health affairs secretary, Md Rafiqul Islam, were present, among others.

Meanwhile, BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday alleged that the disparity between the rich and the poor is widening gradually due to the lack of democracy in the country.

"If you think about the development of everyone, there is no way except democracy. As there is no democracy, a large number of people in the country are now crushed by the rise in commodity prices while a handful of people are buying houses worth crores of taka," he said.

Nazrul Islam Khan came up with the comments at a doa mahfil marking the 9th death anniversary of Koko at the party central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.
