Echoing the allegation brought by many other ministers, Food Minister Quamrul Islam said on Tuesday BNP boycotted the city polls in a planned way to make that questionable, reports UNB.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Swadhinata Parishad at the National Press Club.
Quamrul, also a joint general secretary of Awami League's Dhaka city unit, said although BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was scheduled to appear before a Dhaka court on Tuesday, she did not turn up. "But she came out on the street and created chaos while campaigning for her party-backed mayoral candidates of the city polls."
Terming the BNP's polls boycott decision a wrong one politically, he said it is putting the party leaders and activists on the verge of destruction.
Observing that BNP's decision to participate in the city polls was a strategy to come out of the destructive politics of arson and petrol bomb attack, the minister said, "They (BNP) participated in the election as they came to realise that the party is getting isolated from people and losing its popularity."
Quamrul also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will never bow down to any foreign pressure.
