Canadian High Commi-ssioner Barbara Richardson said Monday Canada urged the interim government to hold election as soon as possible since Bangladeshi people want to return to a sustainable democracy, reports UNB.

Talking to reporters after meeting with Law and Information Adviser Barrister Mainul Hosein at his office, she said, "We are observing positively at every thing that is happening here ... We're following all the events with great interest."

As journalists asked for her comment on whether democracy and state of emergency could move together, Richardson said the people of Bangladesh will have to decide on it.

She said Canada was very involved in working with the law ministry. "We focused our discussion on issues like separation of judiciary that is very important for us and also discussed some issues under information ministry," she said.

The matters relating to bilateral issues and recent reform programmes of the caretaker government came up at the meeting, a press release of the information ministry said. Richardson expressed her optimism about the success of the reform programmes.

The adviser apprised her of the efforts of the caretaker government to improve human rights situation in the country, despite difficult conditions prevailing here. "We are eager to restore democracy and protect human rights in a more stable way," he said.

He sought cooperation from friendly countries like Canada in achieving the goals of reform programmes and anti-graft drive.
