CHATTOGRAM, May 24: Three organisations have decided to launch a joint drive to ease traffic congestion in the port city.
The city is now facing severe traffic jam causing untold sufferings to the commuters in the month of Ramadan.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and the Bangladesh Railway (BR) east zone at a joint meeting yesterday made seven recommendations to bring discipline in the traffic management.
The tripartite meeting was held at the conference room of the Nagar Bhaban, the CCC office, with City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin in the chair.
The recommendations include introduction of comprehensive traffic management system and coordination among the bus, truck and covered van owners associations.
The meeting also decided as a part of the recommendations to suspend plying of goods train on the Saltgola Rail Crossing area from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm during the Ramadan and initiate discussions with the Chittagong Port Authority, Eastern Refinery, Padma Oil, Jamuna Oil and Meghna Oil to impose ban on movement of transports of the organisations at the day time.
City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said we have decided to solve the traffic jam in a coordinated and concerted way to free the roads during the Ramadan so that the city dwellers do not face hassles in their shopping.
All government agencies should help ease the severe traffic jam from their own standing with due importance on the issue, he said.
Chief Executive Officer of Chittagong City Corporation Md Shamsuddoha, Railway East General Manager Syed Faruk Ahmedand the traffic inspectors of the CMP were present in the meeting.
