The charge hearing of a tax evasion case against detained former State Minister for Power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and his family members was held back for four days Wednesday as the Anti-corruption Commi-ssion's (ACC's) prosecutor moved a petition, seeking time for preparation.
Judge M Ashraf Hossain of the special makeshift court, set up at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the city for trying high-profile corrupt suspects, adjourned the hearing until July 15, reports UNB.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) Deputy Tax Commissioner Mohammad Nurul Amin filed the case accusing Tuku, his wife Romana Mahmud, son Abed Hasan Mahmud and daughter Sarah Mahmud of evading about Tk 38 million (3.80 crore) in income tax from 1999 to 2007.
Tuku, who repeatedly submitted false information to the income department about his real income and expenditure, did not disclose his income tax return.
He also used his ministerial position to conceal information about his real income, the complainant alleged.
Besides, Tuku did not submit statements about his non-agricultural property, motor vehicles, bank statements, credit cards, and savings investments, fixed deposit and interest on deposit, according to the allegations made in the case.
The detained Tuku family was brought to the court amid tight security.
