CHT commission for fair probe into Chakma death

The International Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission (CHT) demanded an independent judicial investigation into the death of a Chakma activist allegedly in military custody, reports UNB.

In a statement Friday, a private human rights group, said Duran Babu Chakma (52), also known as Timir Boron Chakma, died in custody of the army in Matiranga Upazila of Khagrachari District on August 10.

The statement quoted media reports as saying that Duran Babu, a member of the PCJSS (MN Larma), was taken into custody on suspicion of extortion. He was declared dead after he was brought to Matiranga Health Complex from the custody.

The statement said according to media reports Babu's body was cremated hurriedly by the army who claimed no one came to take his body.
