Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina urged on Sunday the country's Aleem and Ulema to put up a strong resistance against the anti-Islamic activities in the name of Islam by the BNP-Jamaat alliance as their misdeeds are damaging the religion's image globally, reports UNB.
"This is urgently needed as our religion is disrespected internationally because of their (BNP-Jamaat) evil deeds…we can't tolerate this. We can't tolerate anyone disrespecting our sacred religion," she said.
The PM said this while speaking at the National Imam Conference-2015 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) marking the 40th founding anniversary of the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.
Sheikh Hasina said Islam is the religion of peace and there is no place for subversive activities, terrorism and militancy in Islam.
The PM urged the Islamic scholars to come forward to create awareness among religious-minded people against militancy, torching and burning, and thus establish a peaceful and safe Bangladesh for the future generations.
She sought their cooperation in eliminating terrorism, militancy, conflicts and all forms of darkness from society being inspired with the essence of Islam.
When the government is working for Islam's welfare, the BNP-Jamaat alliance is creating anarchy in the name of religion using very simple pious persons, Hasina said.
They have been calling hartal and blockade programmes days after days without any reason and burning people, including children and expectant mothers to death, she said adding that this is like genocide.
About BNP-Jamaat's hartal and blockade on the day of holy Ed-e Miladunnabi, the PM said they defamed Islam, Muslim Ummah and damaged the country's image. "Even they attacked the common Muslims who joined the Biswa Ijtema this year," she observed.
She said the common people now are not responding to BNP-Jamaat's call as they realised their politics of fraud, cheating and falsehood in the name of Islam.
Referring to her stance in international fora against terrorism and militancy, Hasina said she was highly vocal at a meeting with world leaders in Milan of Italy last year saying there was no relation of Islam with terrorism.
The Prime Minister said a quarter is misinterpreting Islam hatching conspiracies against it and undermining then entire Muslim Ummah through their misdeeds.
Eighty-one imams from seven divisions were given gold medals and certificates at the function as they were adjudged best Imams in various categories.
