Some non-governmental organisations demanded on Thursday that concerted efforts be taken by both the government and mass people to raise awareness to curb human trafficking, reports UNB.
The demand was raised at a discussion jointly organised by USAID and Winrock at the National Press Club marking the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) programme coordinator ABM Kamrul Ahsan, Centre for Women and Children Studies Chairman Prof Ishrat Sharmin and Focal Person of Anirban Survival Voice Al Amin Nayan, among others, spoke at the programme with Director of Change Maker Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in the chair.
Representatives of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Plan International Bangladesh, Rights Jessore, SHISUK and BRAC were also present.
Observing that the government is not taking any effective step to check human trafficking, Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah said it has to be more alert and people have to be aware and informative to fight against the world's most primitive crime.
Speakers demanded exemplary punishment of human traffickers and unscrupulous travel agencies by bringing them to book.
Earlier, the 'Blue Heart Campaign' was launched expressing solidarity with the victims of human trafficking marking the day at the same venue.
