Condemned convict Nizami files appeal

Condemned convict Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami filed Sunday an appeal with the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, reports UNB.

Emerging from the court, Tajul Islam, a counsel for Nizami, told reporters that his client through his lawyer submitted the plea with the Appellate Division seeking acquittal of the charge.

On October 29, the three-member tribunal unanimously condemned incumbent Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Nizami to death for crimes against humanity, including genocide and the murder of intellectuals, during the Liberation War. The tribunal sentenced the Jamaat boss, the capital punishment each on four counts of charges of war crimes, terming Al Badr a criminal outfit.
