Country being pushed into dark tunnel of one-party rule: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam alleged Wednesday that the government has been pushing the country into a dark tunnel of one-party rule by removing the last sign of multiparty democracy, reports UNB.

"The country is now on the verge of destruction due to the misrule and repression by the Awami League (AL) government. The country's independence and sovereignty are also at stake," he said in a message.

Mirza Fakhrul issued the message greeting BNP vice-chairman Tarique Rahman on his 49th birth anniversary.

The BNP leader said Tarique had inspired the impoverished youths at the grassroots to be self-dependent by visiting rural areas. "The country's people still didn't forget his duck-hen-goat distribution programme among the underprivileged people at the grassroots to make them self-reliant."

The so-called Fakhruddin-Moyeenuddin regime of 1/11 could not make Tarique impaired despite their repressive acts, false campaign and cases against him in a bid to annihilate him, Fakhrul said.

Tarique, the eldest son of BNP founder late president Ziaur Rahman and its current chairperson Khaleda Zia, has been staying in London since 2008.

Meanwhile, BNP Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas claimed Wednesday that the government would not be able to withstand their movement as BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's roar will shake Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina's throne.

"We'll see how many bullets this government has got in its store. We're ready to receive bullets in our chests, but what will you do when you'll run out of your bullets? People won't spare you, mind it," he said this at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
