Country goes under mafia's clout: BNP

FE REPORT | May 31, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the country has gone under the total control of the local mafia and looters.

Mr Fakhrul said this after offering fateha at the graveyard of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka on his 43rd death anniversary on Thursday.

"They (the mafia and looters) are snatching away people's political rights and destroying the country's economy through looting," he said.

"Their key aim is to turn the country into a dependent and failed state. We're fighting against this plot and hopefully we will succeed," he continued.

"Democracy is being exiled now. The ruling Awami League (AL) government is applying different tactics to re-establish a one-party BAKSAL rule in Bangladesh. They are in power by snatching away people's voting right."

The countrymen are now looking at acting chairman Tarique Rahman's return home amid the ongoing anti-government movement, according to Mr Fakhrul.

"We pray for the release of our detained party leaders and activists from jail and also for the salvation of departed souls of those who sacrificed their lives during the ant-government movement."

Mr Fakhrul said former president Zia had proclaimed the country's independence and introduced a multi-party democracy in the country and laid a path towards a prosperous Bangladesh.

At the graveyard, they prayed for the salvation of the departed soul of former president Zia and the early recovery of ailing party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

BNP stalwarts Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Habibur Rahman Habib, Khairul Kabir Khokon and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne, among others, were present.
