Angered by media reports that their party is in its lowest ebb in its history, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Monday it is the country, not BNP, is going through the worst critical time of its history, reports UNB.
"BNP is now a stronger party than any time in the past. We're not in any crisis…it's in fact the country is passing through the worst critical time of its history," he said.
Talking to reporters at the BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave, Fakhrul made the remarks as his attention was drawn to media reports that BNP is now facing the worst crisis in its 36 years' history.
He said they together with the country's people will overcome the current crisis through an all-out movement.
The BNP leader said now democracy and the country's existence and its sovereignty are at stake.
Criticising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said the prime minister is tainting politics by making ugly and indecorous comments against opponents.
The BNP leader said they have taken a vow after placing wreaths at the party founder's grave to establish people's voting rights and force the government to hold a fresh inclusive election under a non-party administration through a spontaneous movement under BNP chief Khaleda Zia's leadership.
Fakhrul along with party senior leaders and activists, led by Khaleda Zia, placed wreaths at Zia's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar grave around 11:00am, marking the party's founding anniversary.
On this day in 1978, General Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with a 19-point programme to build Bangladesh as a self-reliant one in the process of political transition from military rule following the August 15, 1975 coup.
