"We want an end to this. We want the guarantee of normal deaths," BNP Joint Secretary General Barkat Ullah Bulu told a press conference organised by BNP's Lakshmipur chapter at the National Press Club in the city Sunday demanding that a missing local BNP leader be traced.
Lakshmipur's Hazirparha UP chairman Omar Faruque was picked up by plain-clothes policemen from a relative's house in Chittagong on Feb 4.
Bulu said dissidents were abducted during the 1973-74 period.
He also referred to a column written by noted journalist Nirmal Sen in a newspaper, seeking the guarantee of normal death during that period.
"The same condition prevails now. Opposition activists are being abducted and facing extrajudicial deaths.
"We demand the government stop these acts; otherwise, the government will fall through a movement," the BNP leader said.
The BNP's Lakshmipur District unit president and former MP Abul Khair Bhuiyan alleged the ruling Awami League cadres had killed many leaders and activists BNP and its affiliated wings in the district.
Many party activists have gone into hiding, fearing arrest and abduction, he further alleged.
