CHATTOGRAM, July 26: A port city court on Tuesday granted two days' remand for each of five students arrested in a case filed over sexual harassment of a female student on the Chittagong University (CU) campus.
The court of Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate Farzana Yasmin passed the order in the afternoon after rejecting a prayer by police seeking seven days' remand for each arrestee.
The remanded students are identified as Md Azim (23), a second year student of History Department of CU, Md Nurul Abshar Babu (22), second year student of the university's Anthropology Department, Md Nur Hossain Shawon (22), honors first year student of Hathajari College's Social Science Department, Md Masud Rana, honors second-year student of Hathajari College, and Mohammad Saiful, also a student of the same college.
Earlier, on Sunday evening, investigation officer (IO) of the case and Sub-Inspector of CU Police Outpost Mijanur Rahman submitted a prayer before the court seeking seven days' remand for the five. But the court placed each of them on two days' police remand following the hearing today.
SI Mijanur Rahman said, "I have applied for 7 days' remand for each of the five accused students arrested in the case of sexual harassment of a female Chittagong University student."
"However, the court after hearing both sides, granted 2 days remand for each," he added.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim, six youths sexually harassed a female student of CU's Music Department in the university's Botanical Garden area on July 17 night. Follosing the incident, the victim filed a complaint with the proctor of the CU accusing the six youths and the university administration formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the complaint. Besides, the victim also lodged a case with Hathajari Police Station accusing the six.
