Crackdown on corruption to be strengthened: Quader

October 03, 2019 00:00:00

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the ongoing drive against corruption will be strengthened further to curb the ill-activity of corrupt persons, extortionists and casino operators, reports BSS.

"Wait a for while… you will get the breaking news as the ongoing drive against extortionists, casino operators and corruption will be intensified further," he told journalists at a press conference on contemporary political issues held at the ministry's conference room at the Secretariat here.

Regarding BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's bail, the minister said, "A member of BNP came to me… he told me that she (Begum Zia) would go abroad if she is given bail."

"He (BNP leader) requested me to inform the Prime Minister in this regard and I did so. But, the court has the sole authority to grant bail as the judiciary is independent. We do not have any dispute with Khaleda Zia." he added.

Responding to the threat of the BNP's movement, the Awami League general secretary said secretly they are seeking Begum Zia's bail to the government but they are openly saying they will wage movement to release their leader Khaleda Zia.

"I want them to wage movement but I can't see any step of them regarding launching movement. Movement cannot be waged by sitting abroad. If BNP was able to wage movement, then the movement would have been waged immediately after the arrest of Khaleda." he said.

About the next AL conference, he said the party leaders would be selected on the basis of their performance, adding that transparency in the party workers will be given highest importance in the conference.

"We will not make those people party leaders against whom people have allegations and are involved in ill-activities and extortion. Our goal is to hold a grassroots level conference.
