CU opens, rallies banned

CHITTAGONG, July 17: After a month-long monsoon vacation the Chittagong University opened on Saturday. Students of the university attended their classes and examinations as scheduled.
Most of the resident students entered their hall rooms Friday afternoon and Saturday morning producing respective ID cards to the competent authorities.
CU proctor Jashim Uddin said students of 36 departments and two institutes attended their classes. Some examinations were also held as scheduled.
Vice chancellor professor Abu Yusuf instructed the departments to expedite classes and exams to ease session jams as early as possible.
Meanwhile, the CU authority has issued a notice warning the students against all sorts of political gatherings and processions within the campus until further notice.
The notice signed by the deputy registrar (information) of the CU said all kinds of demonstrations, gatherings, silent meetings, rallies, processions and human chains will remain suspended until further notice.
The authority's order prohibiting demonstrations remains in force since 13 March, 2009.
