CU tense over clash between students, locals

A tense situation is prevailing on the Chittagong University (CU) campus following the severe clash that took place between the students and locals on Friday.

CHATTOGRAM, Mar 15: A tense situation is prevailing in the 1 number gate area of the Chittagong University (CU) campus following the severe clash that took place between the students and locals on Friday.

Sources said as the clash erupted, locals beat up several students of the CU by blocking the road in the 1 number gate and rail crossing area.

Locals and witnesses said that after the Jum'a prayers on Friday, local residents sat in a discussion over the dispute that took place between the students and the locals in the 2 number gate area of the railway crossing on Wednesday last.

Meanwhile, two students named Shahadat and Mayesha of Public Administration Department (2018-19 session) were going to the campus.

Agitated locals beat up them after identifying them as CU students at around 3 pm. Later, locals beat up two more students at 4 pm.

Witnesses and students of the CU said that locals beat the CU students with sticks when they found their identity.

Meanwhile, locals caught some students in the 1 number gate area. However, of them, the two students were also rescued by the police in the afternoon.

Assistant Proctor Professor Rokon Uddin said, "The Proctoral Body was present at the spot along with the police administration. We have been informed that several students of the CU were beaten up by the locals. We are trying to contact everyone."

Pro-Vice Chencellor of CU Professor Benu Kumar Dey said, "Administration is active to control the situation. Despite that a tense situation was prevailing till the afternoon. Now police have taken control over the situation."

However, additional police members were deployed in the CU area to control the situation.

Police officials said that all of the students went to the campus and the situation came under control after Iftar.
