BNP Standing Committee member Hafizuddin Ahmed on Saturday expressed optimism that the current government and the Election Commission would ensure a fair, transparent and credible election slated for February 12, reports UNB.

Speaking to reporters after scrutiny of nomination papers at the office of the Bhola Returning Officer, Hafizuddin said that people have regained hope following recent political changes and are looking forward to exercising their voting rights freely.

He claimed that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country, adding that people have breathed a sigh of relief and voters are hopeful they will be able to vote for their preferred candidates this time.

The BNP leader said the nation has placed its trust in the upcoming election, noting that people have been waiting for such an opportunity for a long time.

Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed also said many young voters who became eligible voters over the past 16 years were deprived of their voting rights, but are now hopeful of participating freely in the electoral process.

Bhola District Bar Association General Secretary Amirul Islam Bachat, Tajumuddin Upazila BNP President Golam Mostafa Mintu and General Secretary Omar Asad Rintu, Lalmohan Upazila BNP President Zafar Iqbal and General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Babul, among other BNP leaders, were present.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said democracy can only be upheld only by following the path shown by Begum Khaleda Zia, reports BSS.

"Tarique Rahman will lead the country forward by holding onto the path shown by his mother," he said while taking to media after paying tributes to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia by placing a wreath at her grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Saturday.
