C\\\'wealth takes new agenda for dev of girl education

NEW YORK, Sept 25 (UNB) : Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma has said the Commonwealth is going to undertake a new agenda for the development of education of girl children and women. Kamalesh Sharma said this when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her hotel suite in New York on Wednesday afternoon (local time). PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury briefed reporters after the meeting.
He said Kamalesh apprised the prime minister of the policy and programmes of the Commonwealth, and about Thursday's meeting of CHOGM at the UN Headquarters.
Highlighting her government's steps taken for the development of education, the prime minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalised the country's primary education as well as the services of teachers soon after Bangladesh's independence.
She also said the government has made girl's education free up to higher secondary level.
The Commonwealth Secretary General informed the prime minister that he would visit Bangladesh in December next.
Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali, PM's Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar and PMO Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present.
