Defying local and int'l calls, govt harassing students, opponents

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned and protested on Thursday the ongoing government repression on the agitating students, political opponents and general people across the country.
"Paying no head to the calls from the local and international levels, the ruling fascist government is continuously harassing the students and people through the law enforcing agencies," he said in a statement issued on the day.
He said that the government was continuously filing false cases against the detained opposition party leaders and activists, students and general people.
"Police resorted to baton charge, fired teargas canisters and sound grenades on students while observing the March for Justice' programme in Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Gazipur, Jessore, Thakurgaon, Magura and Narsingdi districts," he said.
He said Dhaka University teacher of the Department of Public Administration Shehrin Amin Bhuiyan was also injured due to police attack on students in Dhaka.
He claimed that over 600 students were arrested across the country during students' March for Justice, a part of their ongoing movement against discrimination, on Wednesday.
He also alleged that police also harassed female students.
He said that the government ministers, ruling party leaders and a section of law enforcers who are holding Awami League mentality are continuously spreading falsehood saying that the killings happened during the students' quota reform movement during the last part of month (July) by the third force that intruded the movement in a clandestine way.
"The whole world saw the students and the ordinary people were not carrying firearms during their movement (last month) rather firearms were being carried out by the law enforcers and the government-backed Chhatra League and Jubo League," he said.
"Please don't try to find out third force rather you (government) must detect your own evil forces," he maintained.
"This barbaric and illegitimate government will never respond to the advices given by the civilised persons, because they are planning to hold on to power by carrying out killings and brutality," he continued.
He urged the law enforcing agency members and the government officials not to carry out government's illegal orders and stay away from persecution on the students and the people.
He accused the government of misusing the state's all constitutional bodies for saving themselves (government).
"I call upon you (government) to resign immediately and give back power to the people by holding a free and fair election under a neutral government," he warned.
