Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed says restoring democracy in Bangladesh by reforming the party based on its founder Ziaur Rahman's principles is a challenge, reports bdnews24.com.
"Democracy is in danger and the big challenge for the BNP is to restore it," Ahmed told media Saturday.
"We have to reform party and practice 'clean politics' following Shaheed Zia's footsteps," he added.
He was interacting with media before paying tribute at the former president's grave on his 34th death anniversary.
After the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, Zia, a sector commander during Liberation War, became the new-born nation's first military dictator.
Ahmed, one of Zia's close aides, recalled that Zia wanted to establish liberal politics.
"He used to say BNP will not be a right-wing party. We have failed to spread this political philosophy of Zia among the people," he said.
Ahmed said their first task would be to reform the party and clean BNP politics, emulating Zia's principles.
"Only then we will be able to restore democracy by uniting all democratic forces," Ahmed, a former minister in the Zia regime, added.
