"For greater participation of workers, peasants, women and the poor it is necessary to give life to socialism that remains confined to the pages of the Constitution," Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu said, reports BSS.
He said that the government of Sheikh Hasina was extremely labor-friendly so this is the opportune moment to establish the rights of workers through a peaceful collective bargaining with management.
The minister was speaking as chief guest at a meeting to commemorate the untimely demise of labor leader, Firoz Uddin Ahmed.
The minister, who is also president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), said that military rulers had cast away socialism from the pages of the Constitution but the government of Sheikh Hasina has reinstated it.
He said a minimum wage has been provided for the apparel sector but there is a need for a national minimum wage. He asked labor leaders to fight for it.
"The struggle for better wages must continue - not only in the streets but also in parliament and elsewhere," the minister said.
The minister warned the labor movement should remain free from evil influence of militancy, communalism and fundamentalism.
