Don't introduce proportional representation polls system

Rizvi urges interim govt

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has urged the interim government not to introduce proportional representation system in election as it will create complications.

"This (proportional representation system in election) will create complication. Many countries in the world have introduced this system in the past and later that were revoked. Nepal has introduced that system and later it was messed up," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while talking to journalists after paying tributes and offering doa at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Friday, marking the silver jubilee of Ziaur Rahman Foundation.

"If we want to introduce a new system, then there must be a reflection of it in the society. The civil society is giving views on it. The electoral system will be collapsed if you (interim government) think that this proportional representation is right. Ultimately the election system will be broken down. It will take at least five to ten years just simply to know about the system fully," he said.

On giving asylum to Sheokh Hasina, he said, "Giving shelter to her is providing shelter to a 'criminal'. They (India) are behaving like a big brother if we see their (India) statement. They should get out from that mindset," he continued.

"We are yet to get rid from the conspiracy of the collaborators of the fascist Sheikh Hasina. We always say that the collaborators of the fallen autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina are still active at different places. They could create anarchy'," he said.

Executive director of Ziaur Rahman Foundation Farhad Halim Donar, Prof Morshed Hasan Khan and agriculturist Shamimur Rahman Shamim were present, among others.

Meanwhile, BNP chairperson's adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque said on Friday the prices of essential commodities would have not increased if the legal action had been taken against the thieves and frauds during the immediate past Awami League government.

He made the comments while speaking at a rally organised by an organisation named 'Protibad' in the capital demanding withdrawal of cases filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Zobaida Rahman in front of the National Press Club.

He said the prices of eggs, onion and others had not increased if syndicates created during the AL regime would have been dismantled by applying legal measures.

"Sheikh Hasina wanted to turn Bangladesh into a heaven of falsehood. The students and people saved Bangladesh from that falsehood on August 5, 2024," he continued.

"It is the right time for us to see what you (India) want to do. If you try to bring back Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh and bringing again Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League to power then we will understand that you want to make Bangladesh as your state," he said.

President of the event host organisation Md Ibrahim Hossain, child affairs secretary of BNP Abul Kalam Siddique and it's training affairs secretary Rasheda Begum Hira were present, among others.
