Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Annisul Huq said on Tuesday two-thirds of the billboards in his city areas are illegal and promised to remove those soon, reports UNB.
"We'll conduct a drive soon to pull down all those illegal billboards," he told reporters after his visit to ward no-8 of the city in Gulshan area.
The new mayor expressed concern at the unplanned installation of billboards in a fragile manner across the city.
He said many billboards simply collapsed during Monday's storms, and sought the cooperation of law-enforcement agencies in removing the illegal billboards.
Annisul Huq in his speech stressed the importance of coordination in resolving the city's various major problems including water logging, littering and vexing traffic congestions.
About water-logging, he said there is virtually no sewerage line in the city other than Gulshan area and promised to solve the problem in coordination with Dhaka WASA.
Asked about traffic jam, the mayor said it is not the duty of the city corporation actually. "Our duty is to keep the city clean, repair the roads and ensure streetlights. Even then, we'll resolve the problems in cooperation with all concerned," he told journalists.
During his three-week election campaign trail before the April-28 city corporation election, Annisul Huq promised to make the sprawling city livable again during his tenure as its mayor.
