The 'Dhaka University Day 2007' was observed Sunday amid much fanfare and festivity with the pledge to make Bangladesh free from corruption and drug addiction in the days ahead.
Marking the day, a discussion was held at TSC auditorium, followed by a colourful procession brought out on the campus in the morning with participation of hundreds of students, teachers, officials and alumni of the university.
"We don't want dowry”. “We want a corruption free Bangladesh”. Say, “no to drugs” these were the slogans of the procession.
DU Vice-Chancellor SMA Faiz led the rally. Former vice chancellors of the university Md Muniruzzaman Miah, Emazuddin Ahmed, AK Azad and former education minister Osman Faruque also attended the rally and addressed the discussion.
VC SMA Faiz urged the students to exercise traditional culture alongside carrying out hard study to cope with the competition of globalisation.
He said the observance of Dhaka University Day has a significance as it introduces the culture, academic and research activities of the university to others.
VC also stressed the need for establishing a separate campus for the DU, as the university cannot accommodate its essential infrastructure on the existing campus.
A humorous debate competition by the DU Debating Society and a power point presentation on 'DNA technology by the DU Science Club were also held on the occasion.
In observance of the day, good food were served for the students at the residential halls and measures were taken by the authorities concerned to visit different departments and halls by the former DU students.
Tree plantation and day-long blood donation programmes were also held.
In the afternoon, two friendly football matches between the vice-chancellor XI versus DU Alumni Association president XI and present students XI versus former students XI. VC XI defeated the alumni president XI by two goals to nil while former students XI won by the same margin.
An enthralling cultural soiree was held at TSC auditorium in the evening.
