Former president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) AAMS Arefin Siddique has said the university dormitories should be reopened, at least on a limited scale, in the interest of the investigation launched into the recent campus violence, reports UNB.
"The nation is waiting for the report of the Judicial Inquiry Commission formed to investigate the DU incidents. For a fair and successful investigation, statements of the students are also essential. But many students are now out of Dhaka for lack of accommodation. So authorities can reopen the halls on a limited scale for the commission's smooth work," Arefin told the agency over phone Friday night.
He said the students who are interested to appear before the commission should be provided with all facilities, including accommodation in their dormitories.
On August 22, the government closed the university sine die and vacated its dormitories in the wake of a violent student agitation on the campus.
Later, a one-member Judicial Inquiry Commission was formed with former Justice Habibur Rahman to investigate the incidents. The Commission was given 15 days' time to submit its report.
